University of Kelaniya – Vice Chancellor Vacancy 2026
The Council of the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka invites applications from qualified citizens of Sri Lanka for the Post of Vice Chancellor in accordance with Section 34 (1)(a) of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 and subsequent amendments.
Role of the Vice Chancellor
The Vice Chancellor will serve as:
Principal Executive Officer of the University
Principal Academic Officer
Accounting Officer of the University
Chairman of both the Council and the Senate
The Vice Chancellor is responsible for providing academic leadership, implementing policies of the Council, managing administration, and promoting academic excellence, transparency, and effective leadership.
Term of Office
- 3 years termOR
Until the candidate reaches 65 years of age, whichever occurs earlier.
Required Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
A strong record of academic achievement
A well-established research profile
Proven leadership experience
Strong interpersonal and management skills
Clear understanding of higher education policies
Commitment to the mission and values of the university
Salary and Benefits
The Vice Chancellor will be placed on the highest academic salary scale and entitled to:
15% entertainment allowance
Additional allowances and benefits applicable to the position.
Age Limit
Applicants should be below 63 years of age by the closing date of applications.

Eligible applicants will be invited to present their vision for the university in a 10–15 minute presentation before a Special Council Meeting.
