National Reading Month 2026

The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has issued instructions for implementing National Reading Month, School Library Week and School Library Day programmes for 2026.

October is observed annually as National Reading Month in Sri Lanka. Schools are expected to organize creative programmes throughout the month to improve students’ interest in reading, information literacy, knowledge, skills and positive attitudes.

School principals, teacher librarians, school library officers, teachers, students and members of the school community are requested to work together to implement these programmes successfully.

📌 Suggested School Activities

  • Conduct morning assembly programmes focusing on books and reading.
  • Organize book exhibitions, book fairs and reading camps.
  • Introduce new books and suitable reading materials to students.
  • Conduct reading competitions, quizzes, debates and creative-writing activities.
  • Establish and improve classroom reading corners.
  • Organize storytelling, poetry, drama and book-review programmes.
  • Encourage students to maintain reading records or reading diaries.
  • Conduct programmes using newspapers, magazines and digital resources.
  • Recognize students who read the highest number of books.
  • Provide opportunities for parents and community members to support school libraries.
  • Develop students’ information-search and information-literacy skills.
  • Organize activities to improve and beautify school libraries.

🕊️ Peace and Harmony Through Reading

Schools are also encouraged to use books and reading activities to promote peace, unity, friendship, mutual understanding and respect among children from different ethnic and religious communities.

Suitable programmes may be organized using stories, poems, biographies, folk tales, translations and children’s literature representing Sri Lanka’s diverse communities.

🎨 Reading Activities During the Month

  • Allocate at least two periods for reading activities during the month.
  • Use suitable reading strategies such as KWL and SQ3R.
  • Arrange book discussions and student presentations.
  • Display students’ creative work and reading-related productions.
  • Prepare wall newspapers, posters and reading displays.
  • Organize programmes with writers, poets, journalists and resource persons.
  • Coordinate activities with public libraries and other educational institutions.

🗓️ School Library Week Programme

Monday – 26 October 2026 School Library Day inauguration, awareness activities and the introduction of the theme “Learn to Read – Conquer the Future.”
Tuesday – 27 October 2026 Introduce the school library collection and its services to the school community.
Wednesday – 28 October 2026 Organize suitable activities to improve and develop the library.
Thursday – 29 October 2026 Conduct programmes related to books, reading and creative activities.
Friday – 30 October 2026 Conduct a school-level evaluation of the Reading Month and School Library Week programmes.

Reporting and Evaluation

Schools should document the activities conducted during National Reading Month and School Library Week. A summary report, including suitable photographs and details of student participation, should be submitted through the relevant educational authorities as instructed in the official document.

අධ්‍යාපන, උසස් අධ්‍යාපන හා වෘත්තීය අධ්‍යාපන අමාත්‍යාංශය විසින් 2026 ජාතික කියවීම් මාසය, පාසල් පුස්තකාල සතිය සහ පාසල් පුස්තකාල දිනයට අදාළ වැඩසටහන් ක්‍රියාත්මක කිරීම සඳහා උපදෙස් නිකුත් කර ඇත.

  • ජාතික කියවීම් මාසය: 2026 ඔක්තෝබර් 01–31
  • පාසල් පුස්තකාල සතිය: 2026 ඔක්තෝබර් 26–30
  • පාසල් පුස්තකාල දිනය: 2026 ඔක්තෝබර් 26
  • තේමාව: “කියවීම උගනිමු – අනාගතය ජය ගනිමු”

සිසුන්ගේ කියවීමේ රුචිය, දැනුම, නිර්මාණශීලීත්වය සහ තොරතුරු සාක්ෂරතාව වර්ධනය කිරීම සඳහා පොත් ප්‍රදර්ශන, කියවීම් තරග, සාහිත්‍ය වැඩසටහන්, පොත් සාකච්ඡා, පන්තිකාමර කියවීම් කොන් සහ පුස්තකාල සංවර්ධන වැඩසටහන් සංවිධානය කරන ලෙස පාසල් වෙත උපදෙස් ලබාදී ඇත.

கல்வி, உயர்கல்வி மற்றும் தொழிற்கல்வி அமைச்சினால் 2026 ஆம் ஆண்டுக்கான தேசிய வாசிப்பு மாதம், பாடசாலை நூலக வாரம் மற்றும் பாடசாலை நூலக தின நிகழ்ச்சிகளை நடைமுறைப்படுத்துவதற்கான அறிவுறுத்தல்கள் வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ளன.

மாணவர்களின் வாசிப்பு ஆர்வம், அறிவு, படைப்பாற்றல் மற்றும் தகவல் அறிவுத்திறனை மேம்படுத்தும் வகையில் நூல் கண்காட்சிகள், வாசிப்புப் போட்டிகள், இலக்கிய நிகழ்ச்சிகள், நூல் கலந்துரையாடல்கள், வகுப்பறை வாசிப்பு மூலைகள் மற்றும் நூலக அபிவிருத்திச் செயற்பாடுகளை நடத்துமாறு பாடசாலைகளுக்கு அறிவுறுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.
