Special Dengue Control Programme: 18.06.2026

Notice Summary

Due to the activation of the southwest monsoon winds, the National Dengue Control Unit has reported a high-risk dengue situation in 13 districts of Sri Lanka.

Considering this situation, the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government has declared a National Dengue Control Week from 15 June 2026 to 19 June 2026.

The main objective is to reduce dengue risk in high-risk districts and prevent other districts from becoming high-risk areas.

Programme for Educational Institutions

In line with this programme, dengue control activities should be implemented on 18.06.2026 for institutions in the education sector.

The programme targets:

  • Government schools
  • Preschools
  • Private schools
  • Other educational institutions in relevant areas

Main Objective

The objective of this programme is to protect students and adults in the education sector from dengue and to take the dengue prevention message to the community through students.

Under the leadership of Provincial Councils and Local Government institutions islandwide, together with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education and other government institutions, mosquito breeding places should be identified and destroyed.

Community-participatory cleaning and awareness programmes should also be implemented.

Activities to be Carried Out on 18.06.2026

  • Conduct awareness programmes for students regarding dengue control, identification of mosquito breeding places and simple actions that can be taken at home.
  • Destroy places where water collects in educational premises, including schools.
  • Take necessary steps to dispose of accumulated waste properly.
  • Conduct awareness programmes for school teachers, school students and preschool students with the participation of Medical Officers of Health, Public Health Inspectors or Community Development Officers.
  • Organize practical activities under the theme “A Zone Free from Dengue”.
  • Introduce regular monitoring mechanisms to create awareness among students in the education sector.

Instructions to Make Schools Dengue-Free Zones

  • Appoint responsible officers to inspect school premises regularly.
  • Inspect mosquito breeding places weekly.
  • Prepare a proper system, together with Local Government institutions, to classify and dispose of waste collected in the institution.
  • Advise students to use mosquito repellent during the daytime to prevent mosquito bites.
  • Coordinate with the Medical Officer of Health to regularly ensure that institutional premises are free from mosquitoes.
  • Provide necessary instructions, support and guidance to activate and continuously maintain school-level dengue control committees.

Previous Instructions

The Ministry has already issued instructions through letter No. ED/01/16/04/02/02-2025 dated 2025.12.31 to maintain school premises as safe environments free from dengue and to follow necessary steps to control the spread of dengue mosquitoes in schools.
