Open and Limited Competitive Examinations
Department of Meteorology – Ministry of Defence
Applications are invited for the Open and Limited Competitive Examinations for recruitment to the post of Meteorological Observer / Communicator – Training Grade of the Sri Lanka Technological Service in the Department of Meteorology.
Candidates selected on merit will undergo a two-year training programme. Officers who successfully complete the training and pass the prescribed proficiency examination will be appointed to Grade III of the post.
Open Competitive Examination
For qualified Sri Lankan citizens
Number of Vacancies
A total of 47 vacancies are expected to be filled through the Open Competitive Examination.
Any remaining vacancies from the Limited Competitive Examination may also be filled by qualified candidates from the Open Examination when eligible internal candidates are unavailable.
General Qualifications
- Must be a citizen of Sri Lanka.
- Must possess excellent character.
- Must have sufficient physical and mental fitness to serve in any part of Sri Lanka.
- Persons holding ordination in any religious sect are not eligible to apply.
G.C.E. Ordinary Level Qualifications
Applicants must have passed six subjects at one and the same sitting, including credit passes in:
- Sinhala, Tamil or English Language
- Science
- Mathematics
- One other subject
G.C.E. Advanced Level Qualifications
Applicants must have passed three subjects at one and the same sitting under one of the following subject combinations:
- Physics, Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics
- Physics and one subject from Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics or Combined Mathematics, together with one subject from Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Information Technology or Computer Science.
Age Limit
- Minimum age: 18 years
- Maximum age: 30 years
- Eligible dates of birth: On or before 13 August 2008 and on or after 13 August 1996.
Written Examination
- Intelligence Test – 2 hours – 100 marks
- Subject-Related Technical Question Paper – 2 hours – 100 marks
- Minimum pass mark for each paper: 40%
- Examination mediums: Sinhala and Tamil
The technical paper will test knowledge of Physics and Electronics up to G.C.E. Advanced Level standard, including mechanics, waves, heat, electricity, semiconductors, digital technology and communication methods.
Training Allowance
- First year: Rs. 43,274 per month from 2026 and Rs. 45,230 from 2027.
- Second year: Rs. 43,730 per month from 2026 and Rs. 45,770 from 2027.
Limited Competitive Examination
For eligible employees of the Department of Meteorology
Number of Vacancies
A total of 19 vacancies are expected to be filled through the Limited Competitive Examination.
Who Can Apply?
This examination is limited to qualified employees currently serving in the Department of Meteorology.
Educational Qualifications
Applicants must have passed the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination in not more than two sittings in six subjects, including credit passes in:
- Language or Literature
- Mathematics
- Science
Service and Experience Qualifications
- Must have at least ten years of active and satisfactory service in a permanent departmental post in the relevant field within the Primary Non-Skilled or a higher service category.
- The applicant's appointment must have been confirmed.
- Must have completed at least five years of active and satisfactory service in a permanent departmental post immediately before the prescribed date.
- The required service must be certified by the Head of the Department.
Physical and Mental Fitness
Every applicant must possess adequate physical and mental fitness to serve in any part of Sri Lanka and perform the duties assigned to the post.
Written Examination
- Basic Mathematical Knowledge – 2 hours – 100 marks
- Basic Knowledge Relevant to the Post – 2 hours – 100 marks
- Minimum pass mark for each paper: 40%
- Examination mediums: Sinhala, Tamil and English
Salary During Training
Officers recruited through the Limited stream will continue to receive the salary attached to their existing post. They will also receive the allowance specified for the Training Grade in accordance with the applicable regulations.
Important Notes for Both Examinations
- Applications must be submitted online through the Department of Examinations website.
- Online applications opened at 9.00 AM on 13 July 2026.
- Applications close at 9.00 PM on 13 August 2026.
- The online application must be completed in English.
- The examination fee is Rs. 600.
- The examinations are scheduled to be held in Colombo in October 2026.
- Selected candidates must complete two years of training.
- Candidates may be required to serve in any part of Sri Lanka.
- Duties may include day and night shifts, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays according to a roster.
- Selected candidates must enter into an agreement to complete the training and serve the Department for five years after training.
- Candidates who leave the training or fail to complete the agreed service may be required to repay the training expenses together with a sum of Rs. 250,000.
- All required qualifications must have been completed on or before the closing date.

- අ.පො.ස. සාමාන්ය පෙළ විභාගයෙන් එකම වාරයකදී විෂයන් 6ක් සමත් වී සිංහල, දෙමළ හෝ ඉංග්රීසි භාෂාව, විද්යාව, ගණිතය සහ තවත් එක් විෂයකට සම්මාන සාමාර්ථ තිබිය යුතුය.
- අ.පො.ස. උසස් පෙළ විභාගයෙන් එකම වාරයකදී භෞතික විද්යාව සහ ගැසට් නිවේදනයේ සඳහන් ගණිත හෝ තාක්ෂණික විෂය සංයෝජනයක් යටතේ විෂයන් තුනක් සමත් වී තිබිය යුතුය.
- වයස් සීමාව අවුරුදු 18 සිට 30 දක්වා වේ.

- කාලගුණ විද්යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ සුදුසුකම් ලත් සේවකයන්ට පමණි.
- පුරප්පාඩු සංඛ්යාව 19කි.
- අ.පො.ස. සාමාන්ය පෙළ විභාගයෙන් වාර දෙකකට නොවැඩි වාර ගණනකදී විෂයන් 6ක් සමත් වී භාෂාව හෝ සාහිත්යය, ගණිතය සහ විද්යාව සඳහා සම්මාන සාමාර්ථ තිබිය යුතුය.
- අදාළ ක්ෂේත්රයේ ස්ථිර දෙපාර්තමේන්තු තනතුරක අවම වශයෙන් වසර 10ක සක්රීය හා සතුටුදායක සේවා කාලයක් තිබිය යුතුය.
- පත්වීම ස්ථිර කර තිබිය යුතු අතර නියමිත දිනට පෙර අඛණ්ඩව අවම වශයෙන් වසර 5ක සතුටුදායක සේවා කාලයක් සම්පූර්ණ කර තිබිය යුතුය.

- க.பொ.த. உயர்தரப் பரீட்சையில் ஒரே அமர்வில் பௌதிகவியல் மற்றும் வர்த்தமானி அறிவித்தலில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்ட கணித அல்லது தொழில்நுட்ப பாடச் சேர்க்கையின் கீழ் மூன்று பாடங்களில் சித்தியடைந்திருக்க வேண்டும்.
- வயதெல்லை 18 முதல் 30 வயது வரை ஆகும்.
மட்டுப்படுத்தப்பட்ட போட்டிப் பரீட்சை
- வளிமண்டலவியல் திணைக்களத்தின் தகுதியுள்ள ஊழியர்கள் மாத்திரம் விண்ணப்பிக்கலாம்.
- எதிர்பார்க்கப்படும் வெற்றிடங்கள் 19 ஆகும்.
- க.பொ.த. சாதாரண தரப் பரீட்சையில் இரண்டு அமர்வுகளுக்கு மேற்படாத வகையில் ஆறு பாடங்களில் சித்தியடைந்து, மொழி அல்லது இலக்கியம், கணிதம் மற்றும் விஞ்ஞானத்தில் திறமைச் சித்தி பெற்றிருக்க வேண்டும்.
- சம்பந்தப்பட்ட துறையில் நிரந்தர திணைக்களப் பதவியொன்றில் குறைந்தது 10 வருட செயற்பாட்டுடனான திருப்திகரமான சேவையைக் கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும்.
- நியமனம் உறுதிப்படுத்தப்பட்டிருக்க வேண்டும். அத்துடன் நிர்ணயிக்கப்பட்ட திகதிக்கு உடனடியாக முன்னர் குறைந்தது 5 வருட செயற்பாட்டுடனான திருப்திகரமான சேவையைப் பூர்த்தி செய்திருக்க வேண்டும்.
