Applications are available for the Bachelor of Arts Honours in Tamil and Tamil Language Teaching – 2026/2027 offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka. This programme is suitable for those who wish to enter or upgrade their qualifications in the field of Tamil and Tamil Language Teaching.

For Whom
- Those who wish to enter the field of teaching Tamil as a First Language or Tamil as a Second Language.
- Teachers currently employed in primary, secondary and higher education institutions who wish to upgrade their qualifications.
- Those who wish to gain an Honours Degree qualification in Tamil and Tamil Language Teaching.
- Those whose first language is Tamil and wish to gain an Honours Degree from a recognized university.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should be above 18 years of age and should satisfy one of the following requirements:
- Minimum of three passes at G.C.E. Advanced Level with Tamil as a subject.
- Minimum of three passes at G.C.E. Advanced Level in Tamil medium with at least a “B” grade for Tamil and Tamil Literature at G.C.E. Ordinary Level.
- Successfully completed the National Diploma in Teaching Tamil Language from National Colleges of Education.
- Any other equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the Senate of the OUSL.
Purpose of the Programme
- Develop knowledge in Tamil Language, Tamil Literature and related areas.
- Build teaching skills and positive attitudes related to classroom practice.
- Gain theoretical and practical knowledge to teach Tamil up to post-secondary level.
- Gain knowledge to teach Tamil as a Second Language.
- Integrate ICT in learning and teaching.
- Improve translation and interpretation skills from and to Tamil.
- Promote social cohesion through Tamil and Sinhala language learning.
- Encourage action research in Tamil Language and Tamil Language Teaching.
Mode of Teaching
OUSL conducts this programme through the Open and Distance Learning method. Students will receive course materials designed for self-study and self-learning. Interactive learning sessions are conducted at regular intervals, mostly during weekends.
Students are expected to attend interactive learning sessions and Continuous Assessment tests. The programme may use printed materials, soft copies and audio-visual materials.
Evaluation Method
- Continuous Assessments and end-of-course examinations or assignments are used for evaluation.
- Continuous Assessment is mandatory for each course.
- Final grades are calculated using 40% Continuous Assessment marks and 60% final examination marks.
- If a student scores less than 35% in the final examination, Continuous Assessment marks will not be added to the final grade.
Level 03 Fees
The above payment is only for Level 03. Fees may change when registering for Levels 04, 05 and 06.
