Applicants who have passed three principal subjects in one sitting at the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination can apply for the Open Competitive Examination, provided they also satisfy the required G.C.E. O/L, age, physical and other qualifications mentioned in the official Gazette.
උසස් පෙළ විභාගයේ ප්රධාන විෂයයන් තුනක් එක් වරකදී සමත් අයදුම්කරුවන්ට විවෘත තරග විභාගය සඳහා අයදුම් කළ හැකිය. එසේම ගැසට් නිවේදනයේ සඳහන් සාමාන්ය පෙළ, වයස්, ශාරීරික හා අනෙකුත් සුදුසුකම් සම්පූර්ණ කර තිබිය යුතුය.

Open Competitive Examination
This examination is for the direct recruitment of qualified Sri Lankan citizens to Grade II of the post of Inspector of Customs.
Basic Eligibility
- Applicants must be citizens of Sri Lanka.
- Applicants must possess excellent moral character.
- Persons holding religious status in any religious denomination are not eligible to sit this examination.
- Applicants must possess the required educational and physical qualifications by the closing date.
Educational Qualifications
- Passed three principal subjects in one sitting at the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination.
- Passed six subjects at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination in not more than two sittings.
- The O/L results must include credit passes in Sinhala or Tamil and Mathematics, together with at least an ordinary pass in English.
Physical Qualifications
- Male applicants: Minimum height of 5 feet 5 inches and chest measurement of not less than 33 inches when expanded.
- Female applicants: Minimum height of 5 feet 3 inches.
Salary Scale
Under Public Administration Circular No. 10/2025, the salary scale assigned to the RS-1 category is: Rs. 49,550 – 7 × 540 – 27 × 670 – Rs. 71,420.
Written Examination

Applicants must obtain at least 60% for each question paper. Qualified applicants will be called for a structured interview. Sports achievements may receive up to 10 marks at the structured interview.
Ten per cent of the vacancies filled under the Open Examination will be allocated to female applicants.
Limited Competitive Examination
The Limited Competitive Examination is for eligible officers serving in Grade II of the post of Customs Guard. It is intended to fill 50% of the existing vacancies in Grade II of the Inspector of Customs post.
Main Qualifications
- Must be an officer serving in Grade II of the Customs Guard post.
- Must have completed the stipulated satisfactory and active service period and earned the relevant salary increments.
- Must have demonstrated satisfactory or higher performance under the approved performance appraisal scheme.
- Must have passed the relevant Efficiency Bar Examinations.
- Must satisfy all prescribed qualifications by the application closing date.
Experience Requirement
Applicants should generally have completed at least three years of service in Grade II of the Customs Guard post.

Candidates who obtain at least 50 marks in the written examination may be called for the general interview, subject to the conditions stated in the Gazette.
The Limited Examination will be held in Colombo. Its date and venue will be announced later.
