Applications are invited for several contract-based vacancies in the Vehicle Emission Testing Programme Unit of the Department of Motor Traffic, Sri Lanka.

Assistant Director (Communications) – Qualifications

Applicants should possess a Special or General Degree with Mass Communication as a subject from a university recognized by the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka, together with a postgraduate degree or diploma of at least one year in a field related to Communication.

Applicants should also have completed 10 years of satisfactory and efficient service as a Media Officer, Information Officer or Development Officer in the media division of a Ministry, Department or government-affiliated institution.

Assistant Director (Research) – Qualifications

Applicants should possess a Bachelor of Science degree in a field related to Research, Statistics, Environmental Science or Environmental Management, together with a postgraduate degree or postgraduate diploma of at least one year in a relevant field.

A minimum of 10 years of satisfactory and efficient service in a research-related position in environmental management, transport management or vehicle emissions is also required.

Management Assistant – Qualifications

Applicants should have:

  • Passed G.C.E. O/L in six subjects with credit passes in four subjects including Sinhala/Tamil, English and Mathematics.
  • Passed all required subjects at one sitting of the G.C.E. A/L Examination, excluding the General Common Test and English.
  • Completed a Diploma in Computer Literacy (MS Office) from a recognized vocational training institution.
Age Limit: 22–45 years.
The maximum age limit does not apply to internal applicants.

Nature of Appointment

All appointments will initially be made on a contract basis for six months.

Salary / Monthly Allowance

  • Assistant Director – Communications / Research: Rs. 74,438 + Rs. 17,800
  • Management Assistant: Rs. 46,010 + Rs. 17,800

The Department of Motor Traffic has called for applications for two separate written examinations relating to the registration of driving instructors in Sri Lanka.

Applications are available for the Assistant Driving Instructor Examination and the Driving Instructor Examination. Applicants should carefully check the qualifications applicable to the examination for which they intend to apply.

Assistant Driving Instructor Examination

  • Applicants must be citizens of Sri Lanka.
  • Applicants must be between 23 and 65 years of age as at the closing date.
  • Applicants should have passed the Grade 8 qualifying examination or an equivalent examination.
  • At least three years of experience as an employee of a driving school is required.
  • Documentary evidence containing EPF and ETF details must be submitted to prove the required experience.
  • Applicants must possess a valid driving licence for the relevant vehicle class, obtained at least five years before the closing date.
  • A medical certificate confirming fitness to drive and train drivers is required.
  • The examination may be answered in Sinhala, Tamil or English.

Driving Instructor Examination

  • Applicants must be citizens of Sri Lanka.
  • Applicants must be between 23 and 65 years of age as at the closing date.
  • Applicants must possess one of the educational or professional qualifications specified below.
  • G.C.E. O/L with six subjects, including Mathematics and Sinhala or Tamil, with two credit passes, obtained within not more than two sittings;
  • Or an NVQ Level 3 qualification in motor vehicle mechanics or another field relevant to the driving profession;
  • Or five years of experience as an Assistant Driving Instructor before the application date.
  • A relevant valid driving licence obtained at least five years before the closing date is required.
  • Applicants may apply for the appropriate Class A, B or C instructor category according to their driving licence classes.
  • A medical certificate confirming fitness to drive and provide driving instruction is required.

The syllabus includes the Motor Traffic Act, road rules, teaching and instructional methods, safe driving, ethics, first aid, mechanical and technical knowledge and road safety.

📮 How to Apply

Application Form

Prepare the application according to the specimen form published in the Gazette. The form should be prepared on both sides of A4 paper.

Language Medium

The application must be completed in the same language medium in which the applicant intends to sit the examination.

Examination Fee

Pay Rs. 3,000 in cash under Revenue Head 20-03-02-14 at a post office, District Secretariat or Divisional Secretariat.

Payment Receipt

Attach the original receipt securely to the application and retain a photocopy for future reference.

Submission Method

Applications must be sent by registered post to the address given below on or before 21 August 2026.

Signature Certification

The applicant’s signature must be certified by an authorized person specified in the Gazette notice.

🏆 Selection Process

01. Written Examination

Candidates must obtain at least 40 marks for each paper and satisfy the required overall pass mark.

02. Interview

Successful candidates will be called for an interview to verify certificates and qualifications.

03. Practical Test

Selected candidates will undergo a practical assessment relating to driving instruction and driver training.

04. Instructor Course

Candidates selected through the practical test must successfully complete the prescribed instructor training course.
