The Sri Lanka Railways has invited applications from qualified Sri Lankan citizens for the Open Competitive Examination to recruit Railway Security Officers (Male/Female) to Grade III of the Railway Security Service.

Educational and Other Qualifications

Educational qualification

Applicants must have passed six subjects at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination, including Sinhala/Tamil/English and Mathematics, with at least two credit passes, in not more than two sittings.

Age requirement

Applicants must be not less than 18 years and not more than 28 years as at 28 September 2026. According to the Gazette, eligible applicants must have been born on or before 28.09.2008 and on or after 29.09.1997.

General requirements

Must be a citizen of Sri Lanka and of excellent character.
All applicants must be unmarried.
Must be physically and mentally fit to serve in any part of Sri Lanka and perform the duties of the post.
All required qualifications must be fulfilled by the date specified in the Gazette notice.

Physical Requirements

Male height: At least 5 feet 6 inches, without footwear.
Female height: At least 5 feet 2 inches, without footwear.
Male chest: At least 32 inches.
Eyesight: Required standard without spectacles, subject to the official medical/eyesight test.

Important: Candidates must also face a preliminary fitness assessment. Only candidates who obtain 50% or more at this stage will proceed to the written examination.

1,000-metre run
Chin-ups
Push-ups
Sit-ups
Squat thrusts
Kim’s Game / memory test

Salary and Selection Process

Salary scale (RS 1-2025): Rs. 49,550 – 7 × 540 – 27 × 670 – Rs. 71,420, together with other government-approved allowances. The initial salary step is Rs. 49,550.

The post is permanent and the appointment is subject to a three-year probation period.

Written examination

Intelligence Test: 100 marks; minimum pass mark 50; duration 1 hour.
Language Ability: 100 marks; minimum pass mark 50; duration 2 hours.

The examination is available in Sinhala, Tamil and English. The selected medium cannot be changed later. The fitness assessment and written examination will be held in Colombo only.

How to Apply

Complete it in the language medium in which you intend to sit the examination.
Pay the examination fee of Rs. 1,200 to the account stated in the Gazette and securely affix the original receipt to the application. Keep a photocopy.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified Sri Lankan male citizens for 80 vacancies in the post of Railway Engine Driver Assistant, Grade III, in the Sri Lanka Railway Department.

Educational Qualifications

Passed the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination in six subjects in one sitting.
Credit passes must have been obtained for Sinhala, Tamil or English Language, Mathematics, Science and one other subject.

Professional Qualification

Successfully completed a 2½-year technical course recognized by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission.

Physical and Other Requirements

Only male applicants are eligible to apply.
Must be a citizen of Sri Lanka and possess good character.
Minimum height: 5 feet 4 inches.
Must pass the required 6/6 vision test for both eyes.
Must be physically and mentally fit to serve in any part of Sri Lanka.
Applicants must be born on or after 28 September 1991 and on or before 28 September 2008.

Competitive Examination

Examination medium: Sinhala or Tamil.
Subject: Technical Knowledge.
Duration: 2 hours.
Total marks: 100.
Pass mark: 50.
The paper will test basic knowledge of machinery and its uses relevant to the duties of a Railway Engine Driver Assistant.

The examination fee is Rs. 1,200. It should be credited through any People’s Bank branch to:

Salary Scale

The monthly salary scale applicable to this post under Public Administration Circular No. 10/2025 is:

Rs. 82,150 – 10 × 2,400 – 8 × 2,940 – 17 × 3,900 – Rs. 195,970 (SL-1-2025)

Other allowances paid by the Government to public officers may also apply.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be citizens of Sri Lanka.
Applicants must possess an excellent character.
Applicants must be physically and mentally fit to serve in any part of Sri Lanka.
Applicants must be confirmed in a relevant permanent and pensionable post or service in the Public Service or Provincial Public Service.
Applicants must not have received a disciplinary punishment under the provisions specified in Public Service Commission Circular No. 01/2020 by the qualification date.

Educational Qualifications and Service Experience

Applicants must satisfy one of the following routes:

Possess a recognized degree and have completed at least five years of active and satisfactory service in an eligible permanent and pensionable post/service under the applicable MN or SL-1 salary category;
Or have completed at least ten years of active and satisfactory service in an eligible permanent and pensionable post/service under the applicable MN or SL-1 salary category.

The detailed definitions of recognized degrees, eligible salary codes, qualifying posts and service periods must be checked in the official Gazette before applying.

Age Limit

Applicants must not be more than 53 years of age on the qualification date. Accordingly, only persons born on or after 28 August 1973 are eligible to apply.

Number of Attempts

An applicant is not permitted to sit for this Limited Competitive Examination more than three times, subject to the conditions stated in the Gazette.

🎓 Basic Qualifications

Applicants should have been sworn in as an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.

English Summary

Driving Instructor Examination

Applicants must be citizens of Sri Lanka.
Applicants must be between 23 and 65 years of age as at the closing date.
Applicants must possess one of the educational or professional qualifications specified below.
G.C.E. O/L with six subjects, including Mathematics and Sinhala or Tamil, with two credit passes, obtained within not more than two sittings;
Or an NVQ Level 3 qualification in motor vehicle mechanics or another field relevant to the driving profession;
Or five years of experience as an Assistant Driving Instructor before the application date.
A relevant valid driving licence obtained at least five years before the closing date is required.
Applicants may apply for the appropriate Class A, B or C instructor category according to their driving licence classes.
A medical certificate confirming fitness to drive and provide driving instruction is required.

The application must be completed in the same language medium in which the applicant intends to sit the examination.

Examination Fee

Pay Rs. 3,000 in cash under Revenue Head 20-03-02-14 at a post office, District Secretariat or Divisional Secretariat.

Attach the original receipt securely to the application and retain a photocopy for future reference.
