The National Housing Development Authority has invited schoolchildren across Sri Lanka to participate in an all-island drawing and essay competition organized to mark World Habitat Day – 05 October 2026.

Competition Theme: “My Beautiful Small House”

Drawings and essays should present the student’s idea of a beautiful and affordable small house that suits a family’s income and supports a happy, peaceful and independent life.

Who Can Participate?

Students studying in government or private schools in Sri Lanka.
Children of officers serving in the National Housing Development Authority are not eligible.

Paper size: 17 × 22 inches.
Permitted media include pastel, watercolour and colour pencils.

Tourism Start-Up Competition 2026 – Application Details

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority invites innovative teams to present AI-powered solutions capable of transforming Sri Lanka’s tourism sector. The competition supports innovation, sustainability, improved visitor experiences and the digital transformation of tourism.

Important: Artificial Intelligence must be a core component of the proposed solution. Applications without an AI component will not be considered.

🇬🇧 Short Film Competition 2026 – Full Details

The National Child Protection Authority has organized a short film competition in conjunction with the International Day of the Girl Child, which falls on 11 October 2026.

Talented filmmakers are invited to produce and submit short films based on child protection and social issues. Regular short films and AI-generated short films may be submitted according to the relevant competition category.

🏆 Competition Categories

1. School Section
Students in Grades 9–11 and Grades 12–13 may participate.
AI-generated short films are not allowed in this section.

2. Higher Education Section
University students and students following higher education programmes may participate.
Both regular and AI-generated short films are accepted.

3. Open Section
Professionals and other persons aged 25 years or above may participate.
Both regular and AI-generated short films are accepted.

Place the DVD safely inside a protective cover or envelope. Clearly include the participant’s name, contact number and relevant competition category.

Send or hand-deliver the creation to the National Child Protection Authority at the address below.

Ten competition areas have been introduced for 2026, providing opportunities for students to demonstrate their talents in writing, photography, broadcasting, filmmaking and school media activities. A separate Research Paper Competition is also available exclusively for school teachers.

🎨 About the Competition

The Arunalu Siththam Children's Art Competition 2026 invites talented Sri Lankan children to express their creativity through art.

The competition offers prizes worth approximately Rs. 4.8 million, with opportunities available for both children living in Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan children residing overseas.

Participants should select the relevant category according to their year of birth and create a drawing based on the specified theme.

📌 Conditions of the Competition

One participant can submit only one drawing.
Local Category: Open only to Sri Lankan nationals. Provincial and National winners will be selected.
National winners will be selected from among the Provincial winners.
Foreign Category: Open to Sri Lankan nationals residing overseas.
One winner will be selected under each age category in the Foreign Category, subject to the required standard.
Any preferred drawing/painting medium may be used except sticky and non-drying types of paint.
The drawing must be an original creation of the participant.
It must not have been submitted to another competition or recreated from another work.
If a drawing is selected for the final round, the participant must submit the original drawing when requested.
For local participants, the original drawing should be certified by the Principal, Vice Principal, Grama Niladhari or a lawyer.
For participants residing overseas, certification should be obtained from the school's Principal or Vice Principal.
Copyright of all drawings submitted to the competition will rest with Commercial Bank, and drawings will not be returned.
Winners will be selected by a veteran panel of judges and the judges' decision will be final.
Children of employees of Commercial Bank are not eligible to participate.

One winner will be selected under each category.
Each eligible winner will receive Rs. 50,000.
To qualify for the prize, the standard of the drawing must be equal to or higher than the third-place National winning drawing in the relevant Local Category.
If the required standard is not reached, the prize will not be awarded.

🎁 Special Gifts

Special gifts will be awarded to eligible participants who have Isuru and Arunalu Accounts.

🏫 Special Prize for Schools

The school submitting the highest number of drawings in each district will receive a special cash prize.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ දරුවන්ගේ නිර්මාණශීලී හැකියාවන් ප්‍රවර්ධනය කිරීම සඳහා අරුණළු සිත්තම් ළමා චිත්‍ර තරගය 2026 සඳහා නිර්මාණ භාරගැනේ. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ සිටින දරුවන්ට මෙන්ම විදේශගත ශ්‍රී ලාංකික දරුවන්ටද මෙම තරගයට සහභාගී විය හැක.

இலங்கையில் வசிக்கும் சிறுவர்களுடன் வெளிநாடுகளில் வசிக்கும் இலங்கைச் சிறுவர்களும் இந்தப் போட்டியில் பங்குபற்றலாம்.

Students Who Fail GCE O/L Mathematics Twice Can Continue A/L Studies

Can a Student Who Fails GCE O/L Mathematics Twice Continue A/L Studies?

Clarification regarding school status, the third examination opportunity and the 2027 GIT application process.

Important issue: Some students admitted to GCE Advanced Level classes have failed the GCE Ordinary Level Mathematics subject for a second time. This has created uncertainty when submitting applications for the 2027 General Information Technology Examination.

What Does Circular No. 26/2014 State?

According to Ministry of Education Circular No. 26/2014, a student who has been admitted to GCE Advanced Level studies should not be removed from school merely because he or she has failed to obtain a pass in GCE O/L Mathematics for a second time.

The student should be granted a third opportunity to sit for the GCE O/L Mathematics examination.

The student may continue to be treated as a school student until the third opportunity is provided.

Can the Student Continue Advanced Level Education?

A student who fails Mathematics for the second time may continue his or her Advanced Level education in school while preparing for the third attempt.

Arts Stream

Bio Systems Technology Stream

The student should not automatically be removed from school.
A third opportunity to pass GCE O/L Mathematics should be provided.
Until then, the student continues to be regarded as a school student.
The student may continue Advanced Level studies in an eligible stream.

Impact on the 2027 GIT Application

Students currently studying for the 2027 GCE Advanced Level examination who have failed GCE O/L Mathematics twice should not automatically lose their school status solely for that reason.

When processing their GIT applications, schools should consider the provisions of Circular No. 26/2014 and any subsequent official instructions issued by the Ministry of Education or the Department of Examinations.

අධ්‍යාපන අමාත්‍යාංශයේ 26/2014 චක්‍රලේඛය අනුව, උසස් පෙළ අධ්‍යාපනය සඳහා ඇතුළත් කරගත් ශිෂ්‍යයෙකු සාමාන්‍ය පෙළ ගණිත විෂය දෙවන වරටත් සමත් නොවුණද, එම ශිෂ්‍යයා පාසලෙන් ඉවත් නොකළ යුතුය.

එම ශිෂ්‍යයාට සාමාන්‍ය පෙළ ගණිත විභාගයට තෙවන වරට පෙනී සිටීමේ අවස්ථාව ලබාදිය යුතුය. එම අවස්ථාව ලබාදෙන තෙක් ඔහු හෝ ඇය පාසල් ශිෂ්‍යයෙකු ලෙස සලකා, කලා හෝ ජෛව පද්ධති තාක්ෂණවේදය ඇතුළු සුදුසු උසස් පෙළ විෂය ධාරාවක අධ්‍යාපනය දිගටම කරගෙන යා හැකිය.

கல்வி அமைச்சின் 26/2014 சுற்றறிக்கைக்கு அமைய, உயர்தரக் கல்விக்கு அனுமதிக்கப்பட்ட மாணவர் ஒருவர் சாதாரண தர கணிதப் பாடத்தில் இரண்டாவது முறையும் சித்தியடையத் தவறினாலும், அவரை பாடசாலையிலிருந்து நீக்கக்கூடாது.

குறித்த மாணவருக்கு சாதாரண தர கணிதப் பரீட்சையில் மூன்றாவது முறையாகத் தோற்றுவதற்கான சந்தர்ப்பம் வழங்கப்பட வேண்டும். அந்தச் சந்தர்ப்பம் வழங்கப்படும் வரை அவர் பாடசாலை மாணவராகவே கருதப்பட்டு, கலைத்துறை அல்லது உயிர்முறைத் தொழில்நுட்பத்துறை உள்ளிட்ட தகுதியான உயர்தரப் பிரிவில் தனது கல்வியைத் தொடர முடியும்.
