Position: Head of Examination Unit

📋 Responsibilities

Oversee the preparation and maintenance of examination papers and ensure that they comply with curriculum or assessment standards.
Develop an annual examination schedule and ensure the smooth coordination of examinations.
Conduct regular reviews and analysis of examination results and obtain feedback to identify areas for improvement related to examination paper marking.
Ensure the security and confidentiality of examination materials to prevent examination paper leaks or other breaches.
Manage examination-related documentation.
Keep up-to-date with relevant laws, regulations and best practices related to examinations.
Take responsibility for the administration of the Examination Unit and coordination of examination activities.

🎓 Qualifications & Experience

A graduate of a recognized university in Sri Lanka or overseas with supporting degrees / Post Graduate Diploma in Education, especially in Evaluation and Assessment.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in a similar or senior capacity / senior level in a recognized school, either locally or overseas.
Overseas exposure in training and working experience will be an advantage.
Good communication skills in English and Tamil or Sinhala. Trilingual ability is preferred.
The ideal candidate should be a mature and proactive person, preferably in the 50–55 year age range.

🏛 Nature of Appointment

The post is permanent.
The appointment is subject to a three-year probation period.

Intelligence Test

The paper is designed to assess language ability, reasoning, decision-making ability and mathematical skills. It consists of 50 multiple-choice and short-answer questions.

This paper evaluates knowledge relating to areas such as:

Use of costing methods in management decision-making
Material, labour and overhead costs
Cost analysis
Variable and fixed costs
Direct and indirect costs
Long-term and short-term costs
Economic costs and costing principles
Statistical information for management decisions
Data collection and analysis
Statistical forecasting

🌐 Examination Medium

The examination will be conducted in:

🇱🇰 Tamil

🇬🇧 English

Candidates must answer all examination papers in the same language medium. The medium indicated in the application cannot subsequently be changed.

🏆 Selection Procedure

Candidates who pass the written examination will be ranked according to merit.

A number of candidates equal to twice the number of vacancies will be called for a structured interview.

Marks at the structured interview are allocated for:

Applications are invited for the Open Competitive Examination for recruitment to the post of Assistant Controller of Explosives – Grade III in the Executive Service Category of the Ministry of Defence.

The applicant must be a citizen of Sri Lanka.

The applicant must be not less than 21 years and not more than 35 years as at 07 August 2026.

Eligible applicants should have been born on or before 07 August 2005 and on or after 07 August 1991.

The maximum age limit does not apply to internal applicants or applicants already serving in the Public Service or Provincial Public Service.

The applicant must possess an excellent moral character.

The applicant must be physically and mentally fit to serve in any part of Sri Lanka and perform the duties of the post.

A person holding an ordained position in any religious denomination is not eligible to sit for this examination.

🎓 Educational Qualifications

Applicants must possess at least one of the following educational or professional qualifications.

Option 01 A Special Degree in Chemistry with a class from a university recognised by the University Grants Commission.

Option 02 A Degree in Science with Chemistry, with a First Class or Second Class Upper Division, from a university recognised by the University Grants Commission.

Option 03 A Degree in Science with Chemistry together with a Postgraduate Diploma in Chemistry from a university recognised by the University Grants Commission.

Option 04 Chartered Membership of the Institute of Chemistry.

Qualifications for Internal Applicants

An officer serving in the Ministry of Defence who possesses a Bachelor of Science Degree with Chemistry from a university recognised by the University Grants Commission and has completed five years of continuous and satisfactory service in work related to explosives under the supervision of the Controller of Explosives.

This internal qualification applies only to officers who were serving as authorised officers in the relevant explosives field under the Ministry of Defence as at 23 March 2012.

Important: All qualifications relevant to the post must have been completed on or before 07 August 2026.

The examination will be conducted in Sinhala, Tamil and English. Each applicant must select one examination medium and answer all question papers in that selected medium.

Intelligence Test

This objective-type paper assesses logical reasoning, analytical ability and the ability to reach accurate conclusions using verbal, numerical and diagrammatic information.

Practical Chemistry

This paper covers Sri Lanka's geographical location, distribution of mineral resources, chemical foundations of economic development, composition and use of explosives, the Explosives Ordinance and its subsequent amendments.

Candidates must obtain at least 40% for each question paper. Appointments will be made according to the order of merit and the number of available vacancies.
