Important Application Details

Undergraduate Students

• Eligibility: Sri Lankan citizen
• Age: Born on or after 02 April 2002
• A/L Requirement: Minimum three passes at G.C.E. A/L 2025 in Mathematical Stream
• Subjects: Chemistry, Physics, Combined Mathematics
• Medium: Japanese Language
• Allowance: 117,000 yen per month
• Scholarship Period: April 2027 to March 2032 including one-year preparatory education
• Exam Subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English and Japanese

College of Technology / KOSEN Students

• Eligibility: Sri Lankan citizen
• Age: Born on or after 02 April 2002
• A/L Requirement: Minimum three passes at G.C.E. A/L 2025 in Mathematical Stream
• Fields: Mechanical, Electrical & Electronic, ICT & Network, Materials, Architecture, Civil, Maritime and other fields
• Medium: Japanese Language
• Allowance: 117,000 yen per month
• Scholarship Period: April 2027 to March 2031; Maritime Engineering up to September 2031
• Important: Applicant can apply for one scheme only: Undergraduate or College of Technology.

Research Students – Masters

• Eligibility: Sri Lankan citizen
• Age: Born on or after 02 April 1992
• Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree of 4 years or more with Second-Class Upper Division or above
• Institution: Recognized University / Higher Education Institution by UGC Sri Lanka
• English: G.C.E. A/L English Language minimum “C” pass or equivalent
• Medium: English / Japanese
• Allowance: 144,000 yen per month
• Selection: Written test in English Language and Japanese Language, followed by structured interview

Research Students – PhD

• Eligibility: Sri Lankan citizen
• Age: Born on or after 02 April 1992
• Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree of 4 years or more with Second-Class Upper Division or above and Master’s Degree in relevant field
• English: G.C.E. A/L English Language minimum “C” pass or equivalent
• Medium: English / Japanese Language
• Allowance: 145,000 yen per month
• Selection: Written test in English Language and Japanese Language, followed by structured interview

General Benefits

• Monthly allowance according to scholarship category
• Entrance examination, matriculation and tuition fees paid / waived by MEXT
• Economy-class air ticket to Japan and return ticket after completion as per conditions
• Students should bear accommodation and domestic travel expenses
• Applicants are recommended to bring approximately US$ 2000 for immediate expenses after arrival

Important Notes

• Candidates selected for Undergraduate or College of Technology scholarships will not be considered for UGC university admission process in Sri Lanka.
• Scholarship conditions may change according to Japanese Government criteria.
• If a selected student declines the offer after selection, he/she will not be considered for any scholarship offered by the Ministry.
• Any form of canvassing, written or verbal, will be a disqualification.
