Early Childhood Education Curriculum Framework - NIE
National Institute of Education has released the Early Childhood Education Curriculum Framework.
Early Childhood Education (ECE) is closely intertwined with child development and should focus on nurturing a child’s personality, talents, and mental and physical abilities to their fullest potential3 . The aim is to empower children by developing their skills, knowledge, and capacities while fostering human dignity, self-esteem, and self-confidence. This process must be child-centered, child-friendly, and aligned with the principles of children’s rights and their inherent dignity (Article 29.1 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child). The National ECECF emphasizes holistic development through play-based, child-centered learning experiences, nurturing, cognitive, socio-emotional, and physical development. It is introduced to enhance the quality of early childhood education provided in preschools functioning under different labels, early childhood development centers, and other institutional settings, fostering foundational skills and learning dispositions necessary for formal schooling. This framework adheres to international standards, following the guidelines outlined in ISCED Level 0 (pages 105–106) for early childhood education. Additionally, it corresponds with the National Early Childhood Development Standards (ECDS) for Sri Lankan children aged 3–5 years, offering clear guidelines on essential developmental domains such as health and physical development, social and emotional well-being, cognitive skills, language, and early literacy. The framework provides both academic and practical implementation guidance, emphasizing the following aspects:
- The Nature of the Child
- Individualized learning
- Learning mediation
- Assessment
- Implementation process
